The autumnal winds are starting to blow, and that means it is time to get out of the stale, air-conditioning and out into the open. Despite being a concrete jungle, Hong Kong boasts some terrific hiking trails. It’s time to get some exercise (besides shopping, of course) and discover the benefits of hiking away from the city.

1. Generally, for each minute you walk, 4 to 5 calories are burnt, no biggie. But turn that into hiking up a gentle slope for 4 hours, and you could be burning 900 to 1200 calories. That’s about two-thirds of a woman’s daily calories expended.

2. Taking a long hike outdoors can improve your mood and mental health; additionally, hiking can also boost the brain’s blood circulation, lowering stress and anxiety and improving sleep quality.

3. Don’t be fooled – hiking is more than just a walking activity. Hiking is still a form of exercise that can build muscle mass, as well as improving the immune system.

4. You’ve been to all of the trendiest and hottest spots in the city, but Hong Kong’s numerous nature trails are sure to have pleasant surprises and breathtaking views on offer. Remember to take plenty of photos!

5. Hiking takes some serious lung strength, training your respiratory and upping your metabolism. That means you will breathe better while burning fat, what’s not to love?
